Why Some Skylight Calendar Product Prices Are Going Up (And What We're Doing About It)

The short version: The cost of memory chips has gone up sharply, and we're raising prices on a few of our products as a result. To give families a lower-cost option, we're also introducing a version of our 15" Calendar that uses refurbished memory and sells for $269.99 — $30 off the standard model.

Why Is This Happening?

Every Skylight product runs on memory components. These parts hold the software: they remember your family's schedule, chores, meal plans, and photos, and keep them there when the power goes out.

Memory chips are made by a small handful of companies worldwide. Over the past year, most of them have shifted to making memory for AI data centers, where they can charge much more for it. That leaves less supply for everyone else. Phone makers, TV makers, car makers, and smaller companies like us.

Memory went from a minor line item in our costs to one of the most expensive components in each Skylight product. We've held prices as long as we could, but we've reached the point where we can't keep building them without charging more. The same math is playing out across the electronics industry, which is why you've seen prices moving on all kinds of devices lately.

What We Could Actually Control

We can't control what memory chips cost, but we can control how we design and build. So we asked a different question: does every chip in a Skylight Calendar need to be brand new?

Turns out, when it comes to memory, the answer was no. There's a well-established supply of refurbished memory — chips recovered from previously used electronics, then cleaned, tested, and graded before resale — at our disposal. It's the same practice behind refurbished phones and laptops, applied to a single component type instead of a whole device. The Honest Caveats

These chips have been in another device before; they’re not brand new. However, we buy from suppliers we've vetted — every chip is tested against the same specifications we require of new memory, and any that don't meet those standards don't go in a Skylight Calendar. It's the same product otherwise. Same 15" display, same software, same features, and every other component is new. You won't notice a difference in how it works day to day.
